Speaking Municipally is a proud member of the Alberta Podcast Network: locally grown, community supported.

This week we highlighted the Edmonton Community Foundation and its podcast, The Well Endowed Podcast. The ECF acts as a bridge between donors and charities to create a strong, vibrant community for generations to come. Departing CEO Martin Garber-Conrad spoke with Bloom recently about how the philanthropic innovation that started under his leadership will carry on into the future.

We also talked about The Future Of, a podcast from ATB that promises to give you insights to help navigate what is often an uncertain future. Hosted by ATB's chief economist Todd Hirsch, the podcast explores how our economy and communities can not only brace for change, but embrace the opportunity it creates.

Speaking Municipally is produced by Taproot Edmonton, a source of curiosity-driven original stories, curated newsletters on various topics, and locally focused podcasts, all in the service of informing Edmontonians about what is going on in their community. Sign up to get The Pulse, our weekday news briefing. It's free!

On this episode, icon, legend, and star Jason Purcell joins Matthew and Makda for a conversation about their debut poetry collection SWOLLENING. The trio discuss the value of a good editor, cover design in the age of social media, what it means to adopt a queer poetics, and more (plus, Jason makes a convincing case for why Selena Gomez would connect with their book).

Jason Purcell is a writer and musician from amiskwaciwaskahikan, Treaty 6 (Edmonton, Alberta), where they are also the co-owner of Glass Bookshop. As a chronically ill writer, Jason writes at the intersection of queerness and illness and is the author of the chapbook A PLACE MORE HOSPITABLE (Anstruther Press). SWOLLENING is their first full-length collection.

You can order SWOLLENING here.

Welcome to SCAMTIME, a true crime podcast where your hosts Stephanie and Karen talk about all sorts of cons and frauds, bamboozlers and hoodwinkers, and fun hoaxes. This week Stephanie and Karen have a couple of fun little nuggets, and they are joined by good pal Trevor Leigh. Trevor has knocked the gold leaf and plaster off of an excellent scam and brings us the story of Jonathan Tokeley-Parry.  (My goodness! Doesn't that just sound like the name of a fancy British gentleman dandy?)

A classic 80s character is stripped apart and rebuilt by the modern-day Hollywood machine. Robocop may not have been the most cynical of reboot cash grabs, but it certainly missed many of the opportunities it set up for itself.

That's where we jump in to reprogram some of the film's themes and attempt to add some contemporary pathos to a script ironically lacking humanity.

Welcome to Season 3 of The Breakfast Dish! Join Griffin Cork and his mom, Karen Johnson-Diamond every Monday morning for get-to-know-you conversations with the artists behind today's dance, music, visual art, and theatre. This podcast is dairy and gluten free!

This week, Karen (bravely, without Griffin) is joined by Monty Haughian from Grande Prairie Live Theatre. Monty took some time to tell Karen all about the theatre in Grande Prairie, how not to bank on working wheels and about why he 'comes alive' for Theatre.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (originally titled The Woman in the House) is an American miniseries created by Rachel Ramras, Hugh Davidson, and Larry Dorf. Kristen Bell, Michael Ealy, Tom Riley, Mary Holland, Cameron Britton, Shelley Hennig and Samsara Yett star in the series, which has elements of the dark comedy and thriller genres, but is primarily a parody of mystery psychological thrillers. The eight-episode series runs less than four hours and was released on January 28, 2022, on Netflix. It received mixed reviews from critics, while Bell's performance was praised.
