We explore some of the key aspects relating to artificial intelligence and its use in the art world: the works being made using AI technologies and exploring their impact; anxieties about machines replacing humans; the idea of AIs being able to think and create independently; and whether we can truly grasp the significance and possible effects of the technologies and those who control it, and more. Host Ben Luke talks to Noam Segal—an associate curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, whose focus is on technology-based art—about AI, its history in art, its social and environmental effects, and how artists are using it today. The Art Newspaper’s live editor, Aimee Dawson, talks to the artist and writer Gretchen Andrew about making art with AI and together they explore its wider application across the art world. And this episode’s Work of the Week is Pseudomnesia: The Electrician, an image made using AI by the photographer Boris Eldagsen. The piece caused controversy earlier this month when it was awarded a prize at the Sony World Photography Awards, which Eldagsen refused to accept. In his works, he would reduce complicated messages to clear and catchy slogans. He used bright colors and dancing figures to make art that was fun but also sought to make the world a better place.

In 1978, Haring moved to New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts, where he studied painting along with semiotics. He also experimented with video and performance. Focus on performance made him more conscious of movement in his painting. He said he moved to NY because he wanted intensity in his life and in his art. He was inspired by hip-hop and the club scene where all kinds of people would come together to dance and have a good time. At his gallery openings, he would often have a DJ bringing the energy and movement to a venue not typically known for that vibe, and even after his work sold in prestigious galleries around the world, he continued to make chalk drawings on subway platforms and selling affordable prints in the Pop Shop because he firmly believed that art is for everybody.

My guest this week is Tim Bogatz host of Art Ed Radio from The Art of Education University. After graduating from the University of California, Davis, she earned an M.A. in art history from Notre Dame and worked as assistant to the curator of Western art at Notre Dame’s Snite Museum. There was also the matter of whether we know who actually created what some in the art world consider the most influential piece of the 20th century—which, oh by the way, happens to be an upside-down urinal.

And as descriptive as that last sentence sounds, talking about visual art in an audio medium isn’t usually so simple. I’ve got a special surprise for you this week. I absolutely loved this new book by author and journalist Michael Finkel, and I didn't want to wait any longer to share it with you. Finkel's latest book, The Art Thief: A True Story of Love, Crime, and a Dangerous Obsession, is about the world's most prolific art thief-- and believe me, his story is stranger than fiction.

If you’re anything like me, you love art-- and you also love a good and unbelievable true story about bad things happening to art, too. So you may have encountered the remarkable story of Stéphane Breitwieser, the world’s most prolific art thief, in Finkel’s 2019 article “The Secrets of the World’s Greatest Art Thief” (GQ). Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, carried out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years, stealing more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

The book is out on June 27-- listen now for our in-depth conversation and preorder your copy now!

Please SUBSCRIBE and REVIEW our show on Apple Podcasts and FOLLOW on Spotify

Buy The Art Thief here!

SPONSORS:

Lume Deodorant: Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with @lumedeodorant and get over 40% off your starter pack with promo code ARTCURIOUS at lumedeodorant.com/ARTCURIOUS! #lumepod

Learn more about your ad choices.
